Curriculum

We believe in learning through playing, experimenting, manipulating, and discussing what we are learning. These ideas are interwoven into Literacy, Writing, Math and Thematic Learning times.

Literacy

Our focus in literacy is the Big 5 of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. In a typical day, students engage in literacy through read-alouds, alphabet, and sound recognition, Handwriting Without Tears, and sight word recognition. Students also play with letters and sounds through the writing, reading, and alphabet centers and learn in a way that is meaningful to them.

Math

Number Sense, Counting and Geometry are the focus of our mathematics program. Every day, students count, count, and count some more! We identify and build shapes, and extend patterns. Students also practice sorting and classifying within our weekly themes. As mathematicians, students will problem solve every day and explain their thinking.  This can be done through open and closed problem solving mats, using manipulatives to show how to solve a problem, subitizing numbers or even figuring out what shapes they can make with four toothpicks.

Theme

We have weekly and monthly themes for the students to explore. We read books, experiment, create an play within our themes. Our themes help students make sense of the world around them and encourages them to ask more questions!  Our centers also encourage students to explore the theme through literacy and mathematics.  For more detailed information about our curriculum, please read our Carriage House Preschool Policies and Procedures!
